The Blood Diamond Conflict.
Blood Diamonds are mined in war zones, primarily in Africa. Insurgent groups sell them to fund their wars. Blood Diamonds, also known as Conflict Diamonds, are illegal and many people are killed in the process of mining them. Blood Diamonds are a huge social issue in places like Sierra Leone, Angola, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo because many people have been murdered in process of mining these precious stones.
Most of the people who mine for diamonds are usually Africans who are taken from their family and are forced to work as slaves to increase the output of precious stones.
Blood Diamonds were also used to fund the Civil War, along with bribing South African groups to help fight orf the Revolutionary United front.
The United Nations Response to Blood Diamonds.
The United Nations has implemented a system that guarantees that a diamond is conflict free.
This process is called the Kimberly Process certification scheme.
When diamonds are to be sold or exported they must undergo this process to assure taht there is no conflict of illegal trafficking of diamonds.
